Current affiliation

Full professor in Applied Statistics and Data Visualisation, Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, University of Groningen. This position started as a tenure track assistant professorship in 2009. In 2024, I took on the role of dean of this faculty.

Research highlights

  • I'm (co)author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications, of which over 25 as first author. My work has been cited over 7.500 times. See this overview for my full list of publications.
  • In my current position, I've obtained around 2 million euro in research grants as (co)applicant. This includes grants for six PhD-students and two postdocs.
  • I co-supervise/have co-supervised 13 PhD-students.
  • I've been (associate) editor of Statistica Neerlandica, the Journal of Data Science, Statistics & Visualisation, Computers & Education, and the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry.

Teaching highlights

  • I hold the University Teaching Qualification
  • I've been in charge of over ten different courses since I joined the faculty. These courses ranged from first-year undergraduate level, to a course for the national graduate school IOPS.

Public outreach highlights

  • I've written monthly columns for national newspaper De Volkskrant (2019-2024)
  • I've also written columns for the university newspaper UKrant (2018-2023) and mathematical magazine Nieuw Archief voor Wiskunde (2016-2020)
  • I've been consulted by the (inter)national media on matters relating to statistics/data over 200 times.
  • I've visited the Tweede Kamer (Dutch lower house of parliament) variuous times to discuss issues with a relation to statistics with MP's
  • I've given advice to various other parties, such as the Dutch Healthcare Authority, Statistics Netherlands, the Ministry of Education and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

  • Wikimedia Netherlands named one of their prizes, the Casper Albers Samenwerkings-Uil, after me
  • In 2019 I won the Nationale Wetenschapsquiz, together with Nadine Akkerman
  • I'm elected fellow of the International Statistical Institute
